Understanding Ganesha Visarjan Traditions

Ganeshotsav Duration

Ganeshotsav begins on Ganesha Chaturthi and traditionally lasts for 10 days, ending on Anant Chaturdashi. This festive period is filled with devotion, joy, music, and community participation.

Same-Day Visarjan

Some devotees perform Visarjan on the same day of Chaturthi, though this is less common.

One and a Half Day Visarjan

One of the most followed traditions, this involves performing Visarjan the day after installation, usually in the afternoon. The idol, installed during Madhyahna (Hindu midday) the previous day, is immersed during the second half of the next day.

3rd, 5th, and 7th Day Visarjan

Many families choose odd-numbered days such as the 3rd, 5th, or 7th for immersion, in line with family customs.

Main Visarjan on Anant Chaturdashi

The 11th day, Anant Chaturdashi, is the most significant day for Ganesha Visarjan. Devotees immerse Ganesha idols in water bodies amid joyous processions, drumbeats, and chants like:

  • Ganapati Bappa Morya!
  • Ganesh Maharaj Ki Jai!

In many places, especially Mumbai, the celebration is massive and guided by community Mandals. The procession lasts till the next morning, reflecting the deep love and reverence for Lord Ganesha.

Spiritual Significance

Apart from Ganesha Visarjan, Anant Chaturdashi is also a special day for worshiping Lord Vishnu in his Anant form. Devotees observe a fast and tie a sacred thread believed to protect from negative influences.

Eco-Friendly Visarjan

In recent years, many devotees have adopted eco-friendly practices. Instead of immersing the idols in rivers or seas, some families use buckets or tanks for symbolic immersion to reduce environmental impact.
