About Nagula Chavithi:

Nagula Chavithi, also called Naga Chaturthi, is a significant festival for devotees of Naga Devata (Serpent Gods). It is primarily celebrated in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and parts of South India by married women for the welfare of their families and children.

The festival falls on the Chaturthi Tithi (fourth day) after the Amavasya (new moon) in the Kartik month, which follows immediately after Diwali.

Spiritual Significance:

The word Nagula refers to “serpents,” and Chavithi means “fourth day.” On this day, devotees worship Naga Devatas—particularly Ananta, Vasuki, Shesha, Padma, Kambala, and Kaliya Nagas—seeking protection from snake bites, fertility blessings, and family well-being.

It is believed that those who perform Nagula Chavithi vratam with devotion are protected from Naga dosha (serpent curses) and attain peace and prosperity in life.

Nagula Chavithi 2025 Rituals:

  1. Morning Purification:
Women take an early bath before sunrise and wear clean, traditional clothes.
  2. Nag Devata Puja:
    • Offer milk, turmeric, vermilion, and flowers near an anthill or a snake idol.
    • Place offerings of naivedyam like milk, jaggery, and rice flour balls.
    • Chant “Om Namo Naga Devatabhyo Namah” with faith.
  3. Fasting (Vratham):
Many devotees observe a partial fast or consume only fruits and milk until the puja is completed.
  4. Family Welfare Prayers:
Married women especially pray for their husbands’ and children’s health and longevity.
  5. Charity and Feeding:
Devotees also feed the poor and offer food to cows, symbolizing purity and divine blessings.

Mythological Background:

According to Hindu legends, Lord Krishna subdued Kaliya Naag, who poisoned the Yamuna River. Krishna spared Kaliya’s life after his wives prayed for mercy. Since then, devotees worship Nagas to seek forgiveness and harmony with nature.

The day also honors Lord Shiva, who wears snakes as ornaments, symbolizing fearlessness and divine power.

Regional Observance:

  • Telangana & Andhra Pradesh: Main celebration with household and temple pujas.
  • Karnataka & Tamil Nadu: Also observed as Naga Puja or Subramanya festival.
  • North India: Related festivals include Nag Panchami and Naga Chaturthi in different months.
